LEVEL 3 · Market Structure & Order Flow · LESSON 13
Cumulative Delta
See how Bid/Ask Delta can accumulate, and why data classification affects interpretation.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
Distinguish Bid/Ask Delta from Cumulative Delta and understand classification limits.
IN ONE SENTENCE
Delta is the difference between two classified volume totals. Cumulative Delta adds Delta readings over time, providing another view of executed buying and selling activity.
Basic concepts
Bid and ask classificationExplainClose
A common method classifies trades by their location relative to bid and ask quotes. The classification describes trade location; it does not reveal every participant's intent.
Cumulative DeltaExplainClose
A display that accumulates Delta for each bar or session, depending on its configuration.
Software walkthrough
Menu placement may vary by platform version. Use the current official guide when a label differs.
- 01
Step 01
Check the selected Delta type and whether it is calculated by bid/ask or another method.
Check: Record calculation method, data source, and reset period.
- 02
Step 02
Keep the instrument, session, and data source consistent before comparing charts.
Check: Record calculation method, data source, and reset period.
- 03
Step 03
Record the reading alongside price, volume, and session context.
Check: Record calculation method, data source, and reset period.
Concept diagram
Study scenario
Fictional +4, -2, +1 values accumulate to +4, +2, +3; arithmetic only.
Historical bid/ask data can differ among data providers, which can lead to different Delta values. A single reading is not a definitive signal.
Common mistakes
Issue: Classification differs across sources.
Check the input, version, session, data, or setting that controls this behavior.
Issue: Treating Delta sign as certain direction.
Check the input, version, session, data, or setting that controls this behavior.
Lesson summary
- 01
Classification depends on data and method.
- 02
Cumulative is a running sum.
- 03
Delta is not deterministic.
PRACTICE EXERCISE
Add three bars by hand and locate the Reset period.
Use static, historical, or browser-local sample data only.
